As LaGuardia Corner Gardens has matured, its members have put up more birdhouses — busily occupied by sparrows — and provided more trees, shrubs, plants, and birdbaths. This richer environment has drawn a greater variety of migrating birds as well as local species. Among the plantings are butterfly bushes, monarda, echinacea, spirea, calamintha, fuschia, rue, joe pye weed, milkweed, salvia, and nepeta, which attract bees, butterflies, and an occasional Hummingbird. For the first time, the garden had a pair of nesting cardinals.
Bird Sightings: Black and White Warbler, Cardinal (nesting pair), Catbird, Common Yellowthroat (pair), Downy Woodpecker, Hen, Mockingbird, Mourning Dove, Nashville Warbler, Robin, Rubythroated Hummingbird, Silky Hybrid Rooster, Starling, and various warblers.
